The Canaries: Red hot destinations for winter sun

Well, this is it folks – the days are getting shorter, temperatures are plummeting and it is time to look out our winter woollies. Summer is well and truly over.

If the impending winter season sends you plunging into misery, never fear. The Canary Islands are a mere four and a half hour flight away from Ireland and have an enviable climate all twelve months of the year. So, if you find yourself craving some winter sun, you’ll be happy to know what we at Falcon serve these beautiful islands all year round. But which of the Canaries is the one for you? Read our quick-fire guide to find out…

Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria

Often referred to as a “miniature continent”, Gran Canaria truly has a bit of everything. From the retreats nestled in the mighty mountains, to the modern resorts clustered around the long sweeping beaches, there is bound to be somewhere on this diverse island that is right for you.

Party lovers will feel right at home in the larger resorts such as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the north, a truly cosmopolitan city that plays home to some really buzzing nightlife. Or, if you would prefer to laze in the sun all day, head to the south coast where you will find beautiful white sand beaches at Puerto Rico and Patalavaca.

Perfect for: those who like to play hard.

Lanzarote
Lanzarote

Lanzarote

The landscape in Lanzarote is truly stunning. Home to a live volcano (Fire Mountain) Timanfaya National Park is perfect for exploring, with geysers and demonstrations of real lava flows. You can even buy food that has been cooked from the heat of the volcano!

Volcanic activity has had a huge part to play in formation of the island’s geography. The mostly dry climate means that the rock formations created in eruptions from 200-300 years ago have been well preserved and are still very much visible today.

For example, the Cueva de los Verdes (Green Caves) is a great example of how lava flow has galvanised the landscape. At over six kilometres long (and another 1.6 kilometres under the sea) it is one of the longest volcanic tunnels on the planet.

If you want to put on your hiking shoes and discover some truly breath-taking scenery, then Lanzarote is for you.

Perfect for: adventurers who like to explore

Tenerife

Tenerife

Tenerife, the largest island in the Canaries, pulls in around 5 million tourists a year, and it’s not difficult to see why. Also known as “The Island of Eternal Spring”, it enjoys a warm and balmy climate all year round.

While most holiday destinations are in a deep slumber, Tenerife is cranking up the party atmosphere with its loud and colourful Carnival in February. One of the most popular celebrations in the world, it is probably only second to the world famous carnival in Rio de Janero, Brazil.

Of course, if that sounds a bit too tiring for you, you can visit Tenerife at any time to enjoy its postcard perfect beaches, which are a sure fire hit with tourists all year round.

Perfect for: sun worshippers
